Chester Creek’s waters flowed red in Anchorage Wednesday, as city officials tried to determine the source of the temporary contamination.
Lindsey Whitt, a spokesperson for Mayor Dan Sullivan, said Wednesday afternoon that the reddish-orange water seems to have flushed through the creek.
Images taken by Brendan Babb of the creek near Valley of the Moon Park in Midtown at about 11:15 a.m. show brightly hued water flowing beneath a footbridge. Babb says the coloration had passed when he saw the creek again two hours later.
Jerry Hansen, with the city Department of Public Works' Project Management and Engineering Division, said Thursday that he didn't have any new information on the source of the discoloration since city officials arrived after it washed away.
Workers found possible sites the material may have came from, but no specific source; no samples were taken. Hansen says workers will try to figure out similar events in the future if the city is notified in a timely manner.
