ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
The Coast Guard has come to the rescue of two orphaned walrus calves found near Barrow. The Coast Guard received a call Monday saying that two walrus calves were malnourished and in immediate need of medical care.
The Alaska SeaLife Center says there were no commercial flights available so the Coast Guard stepped in. The walrus calves were loaded into large kennels and placed on an HC-130 Hercules airplane from air station Kodiak.
They were flown to Anchorage, where they arrived around 5 p.m. From there, they were taken aboard a truck to the center in Seward.
While unusual, the Coast Guard has stepped in before to help transport marine mammals. Similar rescue efforts were made in 2005 and in 2007.
