The attorney representing soldier at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson arrested on suspicion of espionage says his client told him he is innocent.

The lawyer, Steve Karns of Dallas, says he spoke with Spc. William Colton Millay by phone Friday, and the 22-year-old from Owensboro, Ky., comes across as a simple country boy who "seems like a really good kid."

Karns declines to discuss the actual case against Millay, a military police officer at JBER.

He was arrested Oct. 28.

Karns says the U.S. Army expects charges to be filed early next week, not this week as initially believed.

Karns says it sounds like the allegations are attempted espionage.

Army officials have said Millay never transmitted any information. They say he was being observed before any damage could have occurred.
