The Army says a 19-year-old Fort Wainwright soldier has died in Fairbanks in a fellow soldier's apartment.
In a statement, officials from Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson said Pvt. 2 Jawuan Collins was killed by a gunshot wound to the head early Sunday morning. The Army says the other soldier and his wife immediately called Fairbanks police.
Fairbanks police told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that the other soldier, 21-year-old Joshua Corona, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder Monday afternoon.
Collins joined the Army in January and arrived at Fort Wainwright in June. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
Fairbanks police are investigating the death with support from the Army.
