Authorities say a 26-year-old Kodiak man stole a handgun then posted photos of himself and the weapon on Facebook.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports Johnny Ray Cortez Jr. is facing one charge of second-degree theft. Cortez was in court on Wednesday.

Charging documents say the gun's owner found his .44 magnum Taurus revolver missing when he returned from a trip on this past September.

One of the men, who living temporarily at the gun owner's home, had been bringing Cortez to the home before the owner's trip. Both men had access to the owner's room while he was in Anchorage.

When the owner asked his temporary roommate about the revolver, the man arranged for the handgun's return because he felt responsible. He told police that Cortez posted pictures of himself with the stolen handgun on Facebook.
