A Ketchikan judge has sentenced a 61-year-old midwife and nurse-practitioner to a year in jail for medical assistance fraud.
Eileen Small also faces five years on probation and must pay more than $8,000 in restitution with her ex-husband, 64-year-old Herbert Small, who also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor medical assistance fraud.
The Ketchikan Daily News reports the charges stem a 2009 investigation.
Small's medical license was suspended but investigators determined she continued working as an advanced nurse-practitioner.
The Alaska Board of Nursing sent a notice demanding Small cease practicing but she continued seeing patients and writing prescriptions.
Prosecutors say she practiced for nearly five months after losing her license and billed Medicaid for 27 patients.
Herbert Small was convicted of submitting insurance reimbursement claims for patients his ex-wife illegally treated.
