A man from Eagle, Alaska will spend nearly two years behind bars for a being a felon in possession of a firearm after he serves two years for a 2011 assault.

53-year-old Raymond Spruell was sentenced Friday to 23 months, according U.S. District Court. The court said Spruell will serve the gun sentence consecutive to his assault sentence when he received 24 months.

In November 2011, Alaska State Troopers responded to his residence in Eagle after receiving reports of an assault.

Troopers found a .308 caliber rifle, a .357 handgun and ammunition, a Winchester, model 94, .444 Marlin caliber rifle and another rifle called a Savage with an unknown model and serial number.

Judge Ralph Beistline noted that Spruell should never be in possession of a firearm with his criminal record and alcohol problem right before sentencing him.
