JUNEAU, Alaska—
Some Democrats are pressing Gov. Sean Parnell to seek an exemption from provisions of the federal education law, No Child Left Behind.U.S. Sen. Mark Begich has repeatedly called on Parnell to seek a waiver, and four Democratic state representatives have filed a resolution saying a waiver would give control back to local districts.
The administration hasn't ruled out a waiver, but the process for seeking one is somewhat complicated.
In seeking a waiver, states must adopt testing methods and accountability practices for low-performing schools. Alaska education department spokesman Eric Fry says rigorous standards in areas like math are also required.
The department has proposed new K-12 standards for English, language arts and math aimed at boosting rigor and creating more well-rounded students. The proposal is out for public comment.
