Anchorage police have identified a man killed in a fall at the Dena'ina Center Thursday night, as an investigation into the incident continues.
According to police, 59-year-old Theodore Meiners of Valdez was attending the International Snow Science Workshop when he fell 50 to 60 feet from the convention center's second-floor escalator balcony, after apparently playing on the escalator rails at about 11:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said there had been a party going at the center, and that Meiner had been drinking.
In a Friday statement, APD spokesperson Marlene Lammers thanked witnesses who tried to save Meiners' life, as an investigation into his death continues. Police are asking anyone who contacted or interacted with Meiners Thursday to call APD Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz at 786-8582.
"APD is continuing to review video footage and witness statements about the events leading up to the fall; the investigation continues," Lammers wrote.
Editor's note: The spelling of Meiners' last name has been corrected by Anchorage police.
