The University of Alaska Anchorage says an anonymous donor has promised a $2 million gift to the school.

A UAA announcement says the gift will establish the First Generation Endowed Student Scholarship and its money will provide scholarships to people who are the first in their family to attend college.

Alaska residents who have financial need and want to remain in the state will be given preference for the awards.

UAA says the donor made an immediate payment of nearly $500,000 and the rest will be paid through a planned gift.

The university says the donor has supported scholarships since 2000 and has been so pleased with effect that she decided to make a larger commitment.
