Drivers are being asked to avoid the Richardson Highway Thursday, as snow and ice left Alaska State Troopers responding to numerous reports of collisions and vehicles in distress along the highway.
AST spokesperson Megan Peters says one lane of the Richardson has been blocked by a collision between a truck and a road grader. While she didn’t immediately have specifics on the crash, the state’s road-conditions website reports the crash’s location as Mile 292, about 30 miles south of Salcha.
Troopers have also reported several other wrecks on the highway, with some vehicles sliding into ditches. AST is asking people not to drive the Richardson if at all possible Thursday.
“The whole highway is just really bad driving conditions,” Peters said.
Peters says anyone who decides to travel the highway should drive slowly, bring appropriate safety gear and consider the conditions.
