The Anchorage Police Department says a fire in East Anchorage after which a man was found dead is now considered suspicious.

APD spokesperson Anita Shell said the department's major crime scene unit vehicle was at the site of the fire, the Conifer Grove Apartments on McCarrey Street, conducting a joint investigation with the Anchorage Fire Department into whether the blaze was intentionally set.

Shell says an autopsy would be conducted on the body of the man, in his twenties, to determine whether he died in the fire or was dead beforehand.

The fire, which started at about 2 a.m. on the lower level of the three-story apartment unit, was mostly put out by the time fire crews arrived, according to AFD.

AFD couldn't say what caused the fire that started around 2 a.m., but they did say it appeared to start in the living area of an apartment.

No one else was injured as a result of the fire, AFD said.
