An Emmonak girl drowned in a local slough Tuesday afternoon while playing with another child, according to Alaska State Troopers.

A Friday AST dispatch says an adult was walking past the slough just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and saw two young children, one standing near the slough and the other unresponsive in the water.

The adult pulled the unresponsive child, 2-year-old Charlene Mike, out of the slough and brought her to the local clinic, but efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

No foul play is suspected, but troopers say Mike’s body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.

Mike’s next of kin have been notified.
