HARBOR SPRINGS — Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the PetSmart Charities, the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs will continue to offer free sterilizations for pit bulls and pit bull mixes.
The sterilizations are offered through a program called the "Pit Stop Program."
At no charge to the owner, the dog will be sterilized, micro-chipped and vaccinated for rabies. Residents with pit bull or pit bull mixes living in Emmet County can call (231) 347-2396 to get more information about getting a free sterilization.
"This is truly a life-saving program and we are thrilled to have the support of PetSmart Charities to help us achieve our goal of spaying/neutering 200 pit bulls and pit bull mixes by the end of 2013," said Deter Racine, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society executive director. "We hope that pit bull or pit bull mix owners in Emmet County will take advantage of this program to help reduce the number of pits that end up in shelters or worse, get euthanized."
