State flags were lowered to half-staff Thursday in remembrance of slain Manokotak village public safety officer Thomas Madole, as a memorial fund for his family was established for donations from the public.
In a statement, Gov. Sean Parnell expressed his condolences to Madole’s family, after Alaska State Troopers said he was shot by Leroy B. Dick Jr. while trying to speak with Dick Tuesday afternoon.
“Sandy and I were saddened to learn of the tragic, senseless death of Officer Madole,” Parnell said. “Officer Madole will be remembered for his dedication and devotion to public service and the protection of others. We will keep his family, friends and fellow officers in our thoughts and prayers.”
Parnell’s office says Madole is survived by his wife and two adult children.
City officials say Madole served the community of Manokotak for about a year and a half, and according to community members, he accomplished more than most do in their entire lives.
"To our community he was a real good person," said Moses Toyukak, mayor of Manokotak. "He was nice, kind and helped everybody. He was really good with the kids and safety was his number one priority."
Madole's family and friends describe the 54-year-old as the kindest, most decent man they have ever known.
"I've only known him for a short time considering how long life is," said James Hoelscher, VPSO First Sergeant, of Hooper Bay. "I know he was a good person, he was my brother, and he won't be forgotten."
Also on Thursday, troopers said the group Concerns of Police Survivors has formed a donation account for Madole’s family. Donations to the Thomas Madole Memorial Fund, which can be made at any branch of the Wells Fargo bank, will go directly to his family.
Family members say a funeral service for Madole will be held this Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. A web cast will be available for those who aren't able to attend. Following the service, Madole will be brought to Barnett, Missouri, where he will be laid to rest with his family.
