Fur Rondy, the annual winter festival, celebrated its Rondy Brew, a week before the official kick-off.

On Friday night, Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse, a downtown restaurant and bar, held a first tap for the Rondy Brew, which is a white IPA from the Anchorage Brewing Company.

Shawn Standley, Humpy’s General Manager, said the brew is not your average IPA.

“This year's Rondy brew, being a white IPA, it's going to have some more European characteristics, in terms of how white IPAs or whites are brewed,”  Standley  said. “Very heavy on the citrus, [the brewer] uses brettanomyces in [the] beer, which is a unique strain of yeast.”

Portions of the brew go towards the festival, which begins on Feb. 22 and ends on March 3.

Friday’s event was the first of many pre-Rondy events, which also includes the beginning of snow scultpute carving in Ship Creek and bib drawing for the mushers.
