The Anchorage Police Department said Tuesday the human remains found Monday afternoon in Earthquake Park can only be identified by dental records.
"The body's in too bad of a state of decomposition that I can't even tell you the sex yet," said APD Lt. Anthony Henry.
Henry said they do not know how long the identification process will take. Police wouldn't give an estimate on how the long the body had been in that location.
It was found by a passerby just off the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail between the path and the water around 2:45p.m. Monday.
The Anchorage Police Crime Scene Unit stayed on the scene late last night investigating the area.
Anchorage police said they will look at missing person lists once they have more information about the body.
The family of Letitia Baxter, a woman missing since August third, said APD called them Monday night saying they had found the body of a woman but police would not confirm that information Tuesday.
