CALEXICO — The Calexico Unified School District welcomed its two newest board trustees Thursday night during a swearing-in ceremony at Jefferson Elementary School.
Letty Zuno-Vizcarra and Ciro Calderon beat out six other candidates for two seats on the school board earlier this year, and both appeared eager to hit the ground running.
Each cited their children as strong inspiration for them to run for the school board seats.
“Their faces, their experiences and those of all our students of Calexico Unified School District will be my daily reminders of who I serve,” Zuno-Vizcarra said.
As a product of the Calexico Unified school system growing up, Calderon said he asked himself, “Do you want to turn your back on Calexico or make it better?” while considering his run for school board.
Calexico Unified Superintendent Maria Ambriz praised the pair’s enthusiasm and reminded the crowd of roughly 75 people that serving on the school board isn’t an easy job but rather one requiring “passion, drive and hard work.”
Tony Valenzuela and Gloria Romo exit the board with the pair’s swearing in Thursday, and Ambriz thanked them for their service “weathering the storm” during the past few years.
The first regular school board meeting with the new board trustees is Thursday.
