HOLTVILLE — Chefs of all ages have been showing off their culinary arts while participating in the Carrot Festival Cookery Contest this week.
“This is the 66th year we promote the carrot, and in this contest every recipe must have a carrot in it,” Holtville Soroptimist Club president Betty Predmore said.
Kicking off the event, young chefs from across the Valley tried their hands at cooking a side dish and a main dish at Holtville’s Civic Center on Monday.
“We had a division for little chefs in kindergarten to fifth grade and junior chefs in sixth grade to high school seniors,” Predmore said.
Following the youngsters, local adults competed in the adult chef category, making their best main course and vegetable salad on Tuesday.
“The contestants can make up their recipes or print them out online; they have mainly been judged on their use of carrots, taste and presentation,” Predmore said.
Local adults continued cooking through Wednesday in three different categories including breads, desserts and appetizers, Predmore explained.
“We’ve seen some crazy carrot dishes. It’s amazing what they come up with,” she said.
Youngster baked once again on Thursday for the dessert competition and the all-ages, miscellaneous dish category.
Winners from both Tuesday and Wednesday evening events will be putting their game faces on once again for the Sweepstakes Final cook-off Friday.
“It will be the last competition between the adults and it should be really fun,” Predmore said.
