The renewal charter application of the Imagine School of Imperial Valley will come before the El Centro Elementary School District tonight.

The charter school, which had a three-year contract, is looking to have a new contract good through 2018, El Centro Elementary School Trustee George McFaddin said.

During this meeting, Imagine School staff will make a presentation ahead of a decision set for the board’s next meeting, board President Charles Fisher said, who explained the board also has to review a 200-page document.

He added that one of the main things the board will review are test scores and pointed out Imagine School has one of the lowest Academic Performance Index scores in the Imperial Valley.

Fisher noted he expects some justifications on the API scores, such as the fact that Imagine School does some instruction in Spanish while the standardized tests in California are taken in English. “We are going to listen to them very carefully,” Fisher said while referring to the expected justifications.

But test scores aren’t the only thing that the board will look at. The board will also review special programs and some of the after-school programs, Fisher said.

The board will also review if the school is financially sound and if the teachers have the proper credentials, said McFaddin.
