Valley Police Beat: Man, 80, dies in roll-over crash

WEST IMPERIAL COUNTY — An 80-year-old man from Arizona died from a head injury after a roll-over accident near the west county line Wednesday, a California Highway Patrol press release said.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, was driving a 2008 Ford Fusion about 9:30 a.m. eastbound on Interstate 8 when he drifted into the center median going about 65 mph.

Near In-ko-pah Park Road, the Parker resident then made a turning movement to the right and entered the fast lane, according to the release. The driver overcorrected into the left, skidded into the median and overturned multiple times.

The car came to rest on its roof partially blocking the fast lane, the release reads.

The man died at the scene.



Electronics taken in home burglary

EL CENTRO — A Social Security Number, various electronics, cologne and a rice cooker both in their original box were burglarized from a residence near the 1500 block of Adams Avenue.

The electronics missing include two Sony PSPs and one Nintendo DS, according to El Centro police call logs, which note a wallet was also missing with a driver license.

The incident was reported Christmas Day; however, the burglary could have happened Christmas Eve.



Grinch arrested for vandalism

EL CENTRO — A 55-year-old male was arrested on Christmas after allegedly vandalizing Christmas decorations with a metal pipe at a residence near the 400 block of Commercial Avenue.

The resident, whose name wasn’t released, was then seen walking on Fifth Street toward Broadway around 6:20 a.m., before he hit a real estate sign with the pipe, which was reportedly three to four feet long.

The man was arrested for vandalism and booked into county jail.



Union’s building burglarized

IMPERIAL — Some $2,000 in damages were reported when the south side door of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ office was forced opened during a burglary Wednesday.

About $200 in cash and a laptop were taken during the burglary which could have happened as early as Saturday, according to Imperial police call logs.

It’s unknown what type of information the laptop carried.



Meth and pot seized

ALGODONES — Some 1.5 grams of meth and an equal amount of marijuana were seized from a subject at the port of entry Tuesday evening.

The subject was also carrying drug paraphernalia when he was picked up around 7:40 p.m., according to Imperial County sheriff’s call logs.

No further information is listed in the logs.



Car chase reported

CALIPATRIA — A car chase near Highway 111 was reported Tuesday night.

The suspect’s vehicle went through Ruegger and Albright roads, as well as an Imperial Irrigation District reservoir.

The chase involved a white Impala, and happened around 9:20 p.m., according to Imperial County sheriff’s call logs.

No further information is available in the logs.

Man stabbed on Christmas

CALEXICO — A man was stabbed while in line crossing into the U.S. on Christmas Day, according to Calexico police call logs.

The 22-year-old El Centro resident was stabbed three times while waiting to cross in the vehicular line around 6:30 p.m. He was treated by Calexico Fire Department and transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center. No one was arrested, and no more details were immediately available.



B.P. arrests sex offender, gang member

CALEXICO — A registered sex offender and a Mara Salvatrucha 13, or MS-13, gang member were arrested in separate incidents during the Christmas holiday, according to a U.S. Border Patrol press release.

Around 4 a.m. Christmas Eve, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents encountered a 26-year-old male Honduran citizen along the international border east of the Calexico east Port of Entry. A records check later showed that the man is a registered sex offender and was convicted of felony kidnapping in 2004 in Hennepin County, Minn.

Around 4 a.m. on Christmas, agents encountered a 23-year-old Salvadorian citizen also near the international border east of the Calexico east Port of Entry, and a records check showed he’s a member of the MS-13 criminal organization.

Both men were arrested, and Border Patrol will seek prosecution of both for illegal re-entry into the U.S.

Sibling dispute quickly escalates

HOLTVILLE — An argument between two brothers quickly escalated when one of the brothers attempted to run the other over with his truck here Tuesday, according to Imperial County sheriff’s logs.

The vehicle caused injuries to the victim’s right leg and forearm.

The brother who attempted to run over his sibling was taken into custody by deputies.
