JUNEAU, Alaska—
Juneau police shot and killed a black bear cub that was severely injured when it was hit by a car.
The accident happened early Wednesday morning. Wildlife officials speculated to the Juneau Empire that the bear suffered either a broken back or crushed pelvis from the accident and couldn't walk and was trying to crawl off the road.
Neil Barten with the state Department of Fish and Game says it's likely the male cub, which weighed about 75 pounds, was lagging as his mother and siblings were crossing the street.
Barten says as he was loading the carcass into a pickup, an adult female black bear and two cubs came back across the road and went up the hillside.
