ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
A 49-year-old Kenai pilot and hunting guide has been convicted of tax evasion.
The U.S. attorney's office says in a Tuesday release that a federal jury in Anchorage convicted Michael A. Spisak. He will be held in jail until he is sentenced Jan. 10.
Prosecutors said Spisak didn't pay the government the Social Security and Medicare and income taxes he withheld from employees of two companies he owned, TransNorthern Aviation, Inc., and Bellaire, Inc. In 2005, he was fined $200,000.
Officials say among various methods to avoid payment, he put his company's aircraft under other business names, created an overseas bank account in Belize and transferred money through accounts belonging to his children.
