The Kenai River personal-use dipnet fishery opens on Tuesday, but king salmon will be off-limits.The Peninsula Clarion says the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has issued an emergency order prohibiting the retention of king salmon due to below average numbers of kings in the river.
Fish and Game says a low abundance of king salmon in Cook Inlet and in other parts of the state probably means the late run of Kenai River king salmon also will be well below average.
The emergency order requires that any king salmon caught in a dipnet may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately unharmed.
The Kenai River personal-use dipnet fishery runs through the end of the month.
