Anchorage police and firefighters are working to bring holiday cheer to underprivileged children, holding the annual "Shop with a Cop or Firefighter" event Friday.

About 50 children from three different shelters from around town had a chance to do a little Christmas shopping at Fred Meyer for their families, with the help of officers and firefighters. Each kid received a gift card from Fred Meyer.

Officers say they were impressed by how much the kids care about shopping for their families.

“It's amazing, just the -- how much love the kids have for their family,” said APD Ofc. John Butler. “I mean, that's what they do: they don't come in here and buy stuff for just themselves, they come out and buy stuff for their family, and that's what's special about it.”

About 30 firefighters and 30 officers participated in this year's event.
