KODIAK, Alaska—
Attorneys for two men charged with murder in the traffic death of a 19-year-old Kodiak man have requested a trial continuance.Markryan Portillo and William Mecham were scheduled to be tried Jan. 30 in the death of Austin Van Long.
Prosecutors say the men were street racing when Portillo's car crashed. Van Long was a passenger in Portillo's car.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports defense attorneys requested a trial delay until June 4 because of conflicts with other cases.
Portillo's attorney also said he had just received a state expert's report and had not had time to decide if he would call his own experts.
Superior Court Judge Steve Cole said a continuance probably could not be avoided.
Another court appearance is set for Friday.
