SAN DIEGO -- A federal judge has thrown out two lawsuits that claimed a San Diego-based online university scams its students.

Bridgepoint Education is one of the biggest employers in San Diego County. It  operates Ashford University and University of the Rockies. Both schools focus on online courses.

Lawsuits filed earlier this year alleged Bridgepoint cheated students by convincing them to enroll in inappropriate degree programs and apply for large amounts of federal education loans.

Last week, a federal judge ruled the plaintiffs didn't have enough facts to back up the claims in their suits.

The plaintiff's lawyer said they have 30 days to respond, but he did not say what action he planned to take.

Bridgepoint officials declined comment on the ruling.
