The Anchorage Fire Department and the Anchorage Police Department responded to a large structure fire at a Midtown apartment building Thursday morning, with two people reportedly taken to the hospital and the building described as a total loss by APD.
Initial reports said all AFD units, as well as multiple APD units, responded to the blaze at the Calais Arms Apartments, on the 3400 block on Eureka Street, shortly after 8:45 a.m.
Firefighters at the scene said at least 24 units were affected by the fire, which was mainly confined to the structure's third floor. Displaced residents being evacuated to a nearby Seventh-Day Adventist church on 34th Avenue.
APD spokesperson Anita Shell says Eureka remains closed between 33rd and 36th Avenues, but residents of nearby buildings are being allowed to return.
Dawn Brantley, the city Office of Emergency Management's emergency programs manager, says the Red Cross and Municipality of Anchorage have opened up a shelter for displaced residents at the Spenard Recreation Center.
Red Cross spokesperson Laura Spano says 25 people were home during the fire and have been taken to the Spenard Recreation Center. Spano says that number is expected to rise as people get off work throughout the day.
