Commissioner Sullivan Gives Progress Report (KTUU / October 5, 2012) |
On Thursday, Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan said significant progress has been made over the last year on a gas pipeline project.
At a press conference, Sullivan released a letter from the three major producers and TransCanada. They estimated the cost of a pipeline project could range from $45 billion to more than $65 billion.
Sullivan acknowledged that many Alaskans remain skeptical about the project actually happening, but he said the companies are meeting major bench marks set forth by the governor.
In the letter the companies said the project would use 1.7 million tons of steel, and at peak construction the workforce would be 15-thousand people with more than a thousand permanent people in Alaska.
“There is a lot of skepticism in Alaska and I think it’s merited to be honest and what we're trying to do is to align these interests because look at the history what happened is when things have stalled,” Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan said. “It’s either the market the alignment or the timing and right now things are looking like they can come together but we got a lot of work to do all of us.”
