Anchorage students kicked off Red Ribbon Week Friday by pledging to live drug and alcohol-free. This is the 25th year for the National Drug Awareness Program, which aims to help kids make good decisions.

The program was started by parents in honor of a drug enforcement agent killed while trying to stop a drug trafficking operation. The ribbons are meant to remind kids of how a single decision can change a life.

“We are trying to celebrate the fact that kids are living drug-free lives,” said Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Anita Shell.

Students will celebrate their choice to be drug-free and wear their red ribbons all next week.
