The Anchorage Police Department is wrapping up 2012 with two unsolved homicide cases still on the books.

In April, APD responded to a double shooting at the R&R Garage on Fireweed near C st.  One of the shootings was fatal and the case remains unsolved.

In October, APD was called to a deadly shooting outside the Anchorage nightclub Platinum Jaxx.  Although pictures and video taken by witnesses with smart phones have aided investigators, this case has also yet to be solved.

APD says there have been 18 homicides this year in Anchorage.  Homicide Detective Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz said that figure is close to average for the nation.  "I think the average now is less than six homicides per 100,000 people, and if you look at our city, 280,000 people, that's about average," he said.

There is no statute of limitations on homicide cases, so the end of the year has no bearing on an unsolved homicide investigation.
