The Anchorage School Board voted Thursday night to replace their current math program, "Everyday Math."
The school board unanimously approved the change to a new math curriculum for elementary and middle school students.
The process to switch math courses for elementary and middle school students sparked in 2011 after many parents complained that the "Everyday Math" program was confusing and too difficult to understand. A committee was then formed to review the public's input and to find other math programs.
The district's math curriculum coordinator, Bobbi Jo Erb, says the committee decided on the "Go Math" program for elementary students and the "Big Ideas" program for students in middle school.
"There will be no text book that is going to be a perfect set of materials," said Erb. "We truly believe, the committee has communicated to me, that this is the absolute best choice for our district."
The new programs will be taught at all elementary and middle schools next school year.
