Anchorage, Alaska—
Avalanche forecasters say avalanche danger is "considerable" this weekend. Warming temperatures and a windy forecast can make it risky for back-country users and forecasters say the conditions will likely continue through Sunday, and possibly into the week.At Team CC in Wasilla, a group of snowmachiners chose to stay inside and learn the basics of snow safety. The North America Outdoor Institute sponsored the snow safety seminar, an effort to focus on educating snowmachiners, back-country users who have taken the lead when it comes to avalanche related deaths.
"Technology and machines are bigger and better and faster than they used to be and so people are getting further out in mountains and we want people to become more aware of what's out there," says Dorothy Adler with NAOI.
Forecasters say avalanche conditions change on a daily basis. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center updates its websites daily at www.cnfaic.org.
