Police shot and killed a black bear attempting to break into an Eastside Anchorage residence Friday.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker said the incident happened at about 5:14 in the evening, when a black bear tried to get into a house on the 2400 block of Glenkerry Drive, near the Anchorage Baptist Temple.

Officers on the scene shot and killed the young female black bear.

"If it's asscociating with humans or posing any threat it has to go," Parker said.

Neighbors gathered after the incident and watched as officers removed the dead bear from the lawn. Officers transported the carcass to an Anchorage non-profit that distributes wild game meat.

Nancy Musick said she was sitting on a friend's deck across the street when she heard "the click-click of a shotgun."

She then saw  police shoot the bear several times on the lawn of the house across the street, killing it after three or four shots.

Neighbors say that specific bear had been frequenting the neighborhood.
