In a surprise announcement Friday night, Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan says the Boys and Girls Clubs of Anchorage will be funded at 2012 levels for the 2013 fiscal year.

Originally, the clubs were left out of both versions of Sullivan’s proposed 2013 budget.

“I think this community center is a big part of the community and if you take that away, that's like cutting off a limb,” said staff member Canard Davis.

The mayor says the Mountainview Center will get $350,000 and the Northeast Community Center is getting $181,000 out of the Parks and Recreation budget.

Sullivan originally left the Boys and Girls Clubs out of the budget because he thought they would be getting 4 million dollars from the municipality's purchase of Waldron Lake Park, that sale is tied up in court.

"They were rightfully worried because I think they had not realized the 4 million dollar situation had not gone through,” said Sullivan.  “We found that out at the city level and we made the commitment not to reduce their funding."
