Part of the effort is to raise money to cover clean up expenses from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, which has so far cost the company $8 billion.

BP has set aside a total of $20 billion to finance recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Sunday Times quoted an unnamed source who said the company would sell its Prudhoe stake for “the right price.”

Local BP officials say they don't comment on market speculation.
