2013 will begin on an Icy note in some parts of South Central Alaska.
Slush from last weekend's unseasonably warm winter is now refreezing as temperatures become cooler. That means some roads are suddenly hazardous to drive on.
"Right now in Anchorage we're running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," said DOT Chief of Operations Randy Vanderwood. "We're going to be out on the roads applying sand, where we need it, or thawing culverts out where that needs to be taken care of."
Vanderwood says the biggest concerns are secondary roads on the Hillside and Eagle River. Some of those streets rarely see the sun this time of year.
"We are still getting some melting snow, a lot of the raised medians are still melting snow, so it does drain across the median, and refreezes at night time," adds Vanderwood.
DOT is encouraging drivers to check conditions on the state's website before heading out for the holiday.
