The Chena River State Recreation Area, located 26 miles east of Fairbanks, has made National Geographic's list of best winter trips to take in 2013.
This top-ten list, "Best Winter Trips 2013," praises the Chena River State Recreation Area for its 397 square miles of forest and open alpine tundra available for a number of winter activities; its close proximity to Chena Hot Springs Resort; and its multiple ways to view the aurora borealis, whether by "Snow Coach" or in the heated "Aurorium" log cabin.
The National Geographic article also recognizes the final stretch of the Yukon Quest, the thousand-mile international sled dog race, runs through the area alongside the old Chena Hot Springs Winter Trail on February 16.
