Residents of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island have been without power since Sunday, according to some reports.

Power has been restored to some homes in the community of about 650, but several are still without power.

A plane landed Wednesday with a few linemen to try to figure out the problem. Mira Kohler, the CEO of the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, said the linemen were trying to isolate one or more transformers damaged by wind.

The linemen must climb each pole and re-energize the line to figure out if it’s working or not, and that’s in negative 45 degree temperatures with wind chill.

Kohler said the power should be back on for everyone sometime Wednesday.

In the meantime, some residents are reportedly sleeping in the school gym for emergency shelter.
