Crews work to restore power in Savoonga

The village of Savoonga was never entirely without power since the early hours of Monday 12/26/10.  Of the approximately 210 consumers on AVEC's distribution system, about 2/3 (3/4 at most) were without power until Monday evening after the first lineman arrived and found one of the problems and made repairs to the first problem found.  More consumers had restored on Tuesday, and as of Wednesday evening (tonight), most of the subscribing customers' power was restored and more problems were identified and plans for repairs put in motion. AVEC sent a lineman to Savoonga on Monday, another on Tuesday, and additional crewmember(s) will travel on Thursday morning to continue repairing problems caused by heavy cold winds and ice wreaking havoc on power lines and equipment that bring electricity to the cooperative members of Savoonga.   Hopefully, not too many homes and businesses had irrepairable damage.  At least a week's worth of repairs are estimated to follow the weather that iced up the power lines, transformers, and other equipment that involve bringing power to the cooperative members.
