According to police, Winters told most victims a similar story: his car broke down with his pregnant wife inside, and he needed money for a tow.
Police say he promised to pay his victims back and even provided a phone number -- but the number never connected to Winters.
“I'm a stay-at-home father and I hang out with a lot of mothers with children, and I would do anything to help anybody,” said Roger Parr, who was approached by Winters. “But when I started offering solutions to his problem, that's not what he wanted -- he wanted money.”
“If you're approached by someone like this, please call the police because these people can gain hundreds and thousands of dollars in a short amount of time -- even in a day -- hitting several marks,” said APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker.
Police say if you would like to help someone asking for money, the best thing to do is support a local charitable oraganization like Bean’s Café.
