A group of House Democrats plans to introduce legislation allowing for Alaskans to register the same day they vote.

Currently, voters must be registered at least 30 days before an election.

Rep. Les Gara, the proposal's prime sponsor, said in a news release that the Democrats want more people to vote and to be engaged. Other Democrats who have signed on include Reps. Scott Kawasaki, Max Gruenberg, Chris Tuck, Geran Tarr and Andy Josephson. Gara says the measure is expected to be introduced Monday.

It is one of several proposals related to voting that have been introduced, either by Republicans or Democrats. Others include a voter ID bill and making an absentee ballot application valid through two general elections.
