The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Fill the Boot” fundraiser, for which firefighters will be on city streets Friday, has been the subject of numerous Anchorage Assembly meetings -- and an override of a veto by Mayor Dan Sullivan -- due to its use of city firefighters on city time.
International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1264 and volunteers from the Anchorage Fire Department will hold “Fill the Boot” from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. in Eagle River, Anchorage and Girdwood.
The money collected benefits research and local services for the MDA’s Alaska chapter. Last year, firefighters raised over $115,000.
“Fill the Boot” began in 1954 with two Nevada firefighters raising money for Jerry's Kids. Since then, firefighters' boots across the country have collected over $300 million.
