Thanksgiving Blessing Increases by 17 Percent

Thanksgiving Blessing Increases by 17 Percent (KTUU / November 21, 2012)

Monday’s Thanksgiving Blessing provided more than 9,500 families with a turkey and all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal.

For 9 years, the Food Bank of Alaska and its partners in the faith community joined together for the Thanksgiving project.

This year, 9,525 families received help with their meal across 7 locations in the Valley, Anchorage, and Eagle River.

That's an increase of 17 percent from 2011.

Churches and congregations raised money and food plus recruit volunteers to help with set up and food distribution.

The Food Bank of Alaska provided the turkeys, and helps purchase food in bulk.

Local farmers also donated apples and potatoes.

The State of Alaska's Department of Health and Social Services also provided a grant of about $27,000 to help pay for the turkeys.
