The former executive director of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission was sentenced Wednesday in Federal Court in Anchorage.

61-year-old Maggie Ahmaogak was hit with a 41-month prison sentence and ordered to repay more than $393-thousand she stole from the organization.

A federal indictment alleged she stole whaling commission funds from 2004 to 2007. Authorities say she used the money to gamble in Washington, Las Vegas and New Orleans, and to buy three snowmachines and put a down payment on an suv.

In a written statement, commission chairman George Noongwook said "even though it has been a difficult time, we have learned from it and have rebuilt and strengthened our organization so that it is more effective for our people and so that nothing like this can ever happen to us again."
