The Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association, also known as the Four A's, held a candlelight vigil on Saturday, December 1st, in honor of World AIDS Day.
The Four A's works with the state to provide support to those living with AIDS or HIV and to prevent the transmission of the HIV infection.
Anchorage's town square was filled with dozens of people who came to light a candle and hear the names of Alaskans who had battled and passed away from the disease. More than 240 names were read Saturday night.
"The purpose of World AIDS Day is to remember those who have been lost to the world AIDS epidemic," said Four A's Executive Director Heather Davis, "and to remind people that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is still around us."
The vigil also included a prayer ceremony, and for every ten names read of individuals lost to the disease a red paper crane was hung up.
