A popular Fairbanks community skating rink is a top candidate for being turned into gym space for military training.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Fort Wainwright's garrison commander is weighing the idea. Col. Ron Johnson says there is no money in the budget to build a new gym, so the ice rink is a good candidate for new gym space.
The Fort Wainwright Physical Fitness Center and its ice rink were built in 1992. If Fairbanks lost the ice rink, it would reduce the total number of covered ice rinks in the Fairbanks area to four, if you count the part-time ice rink at the Carlson Center.
Johnson says the fort is doing a feasibility study that features a community survey on the need for workout space.
