A state House panel will consider a bill that calls for designating March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day in Alaska.
The special committee on Military and Veterans' Affairs is scheduled to hear HB67 on Thursday.
March 29, 1973 was the date the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam.
Last year, President Barack Obama proclaimed March 29, 2012, as Vietnam Veterans Day. HB67, by Fairbank Rep. Steve Thompson, would designate Vietnam Veterans Day as an annual observation in Alaska.
The bill calls for "suitable observances and exercises by civic groups and the public."
In his sponsor statement, Thompson said veterans of the war returned home with silence and disdain in some cases.Copyright © 2013, KTUU-TV
