Kodiak's famous brown bears are causing headaches for the city's trash collectors.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports a handful of Kodiak residents Thursday asked Kodiak Island Bourough Assembly members to fine people who fail to appropriately protect garbage from four-legged marauders.
Kodiak police use loud cracker shells and rubber bullets to chase off bears. City resident April Eads told assembly members Thursday night that it sounded like a war zone outside her home last weekend.
Eads says there should be an ordinance across the island requiring people to properly contain garbage and prevent it from attracting bears.
Assemblywoman Louise Stutes says the local trash collection company should provide bear-resident roll carts for refuse pickups.
