A young man has been killed in a drag race across a bridge in Kodiak.
According to KMXT (http://bit.ly/a0fgrl), the accident occurred just before 1 a.m. Friday as two cars raced across the bridge to Near Island.
Kodiak Police Chief T.C. Kamai says the cars were traveling at an estimated 60 miles per hour and bumped. The driver of one of the cars lost control and hit a pickup traveling in the opposite direction.
Both occupants of the car were taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center where the passenger, 19-year-old Austin Van Long of Kodiak, was pronounced dead. The still unidentified driver is in serious condition.
The driver of the other car, 19-year-old William J. Mecham, has been jailed on charges of second-degree murder and driving under the influence.
