A 20-year-old man who was involved in a deadly street race has been sentenced to jail.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror says William Mecham pleaded guilty Friday to criminally negligent homicide and second-degree assault in the death of 19-year-old Austin Van Long of Kodiak. Mecham will spend five years in jail.
Police say Mecham and Markryan Portillo were engaged in a high-speed street race last October across Fred Zharoff Memorial Bridge when the accident occurred. Long was a passenger in Portillo's vehicle.
As the two vehicles drove side-by-side across the bridge, a truck tried to cross the bridge in the opposite direction. Mecham swerved to miss the truck but hit Portillo's vehicle.
Portillo is charged with murder. His trial is scheduled for early 2013.
